Description
Chachalaca Enjoying the Fruits of the Shrub by Debra Martz On an early morning arrival at the Bentsen-Rio Grande State Park in south Texas, I came upon a half dozen or more of the Plain Chacalacas climbing through the upper part of this shrub enjoying its fruit for breakfast. They were in between the parking lot and the visitors center and once inside to check-in, I forgot to ask for name of the shrub.
The Plain Chachalaca is referred to as a large chicken-like bird of Mexico and Central America, however it reaches the United States only in southern Texas. Current range of the Chachalaca is limited to Cameron, Hidalgo, Starr, and Willacy counties in the Rio Grande Valley.
Its name comes from its loud, raucous calls...not because it has the moves of a Cha-Cha dancer! :-)

There are so many cool birds on the Texas border that come over from Mexico. Thank you, Toni!
