Brooklyn Bridge Tower and Cables ©Debra Martz For some locals, it's a way to walk to work. For tourists, it is a highlight to walk the 1.3 miles across this famous bridge. We chose to walk from Brooklyn across the East River to Lower Manhattan. There are two suspension towers, 1600 feet apart, that are the support for this suspension bridge. The towers are 278 feet (85 m) tall with a footprint of 140 by 59 feet (43 by 18 m) at the high water line. They are built of limestone quarried in NY, granite, and Rosendale cement.
