Bear Creek Mound - Natchez Trace by Debra Martz
Located at mile marker 308 is the oldest prehistoric site on the Trace. First used by hunters as early as 7000BC and intermittently occupied for about 8000 years.

("This square, flat-topped mound was built in several stages for ceremonial or elite residential use sometime between 1100 and 1300 A.D., during the Mississippian period. Burned daub (mud plaster used in building construction) found on the mound during archeological excavation indicates the former presence of a temple or chief's house. A small, contemporaneous habitation area is located to the south and east of the mound. When acquired by the National Park Service the mound had been greatly reduced in height by plowing. Following excavation in 1965, the mound was restored to its estimated original dimensions of about eight feet high by 85 feet across the base." via http://www.legendsofamerica.com/ )

The Natchez Trace is a National Parkway that is 444 miles from Natchez, MS to Nashville, TN. But you can travel it either direction and get on or off at many exits along the way. It's a beautiful drive filled with historical stops and very leisurely which is difficult to find in the way of travel anymore. The speed limit ranges from 40-50mph on a two-highway. PS: Don't plan to drive it in a day....grab a guide book and stop often to enjoy the history, trails and views!
