Description
American White Pelican Couple by Debra Martz This couple both have the "horn" on their upper beak which is grown during breeding season by both male and female. I see no yellow feathers at the crown so my assumption is they are in the pre-breeding period. Though they appear to be all white in feathering, their wings are black and easily seen when in flight as they have a wingspan of 9 feet! And what an awesome sight to see when they are in large flocks, especially when migrating.
American White Pelicans are mainly migratory birds and many spend the winter in south Texas along the coast where I live. I say mainly migratory because over the years it has been observed that small numbers of them do not go back north at winter's end.
