Description
American Coot - Check Out My Feet by Debra Martz There is rarely a time that I'm out birdwatching that I don't see an American Coot. But it is a bit rare to get to see those feet! Actually, it is the coot’s long toes of blue, green, yellow that was a surprise to me the very first time I saw those feet. The toes have broad lobes of skin that help it kick through the water. Those lobes fold back each time the bird lifts its foot, so it doesn’t interfere with walking on dry land and gives support on murky grounds. And though you will see it most often swimming like a duck, with ducks, it is not a duck at all! No webbed feet here!! You'll find the American Coot in most of the United States, north into Canada and south throughout most of Central America.
Scientific name: Fulica americana
