One of those moments when another creature of wildlife seems to feel sorry for what has happened. I watched this sanderling for awhile and it never attempted to poke/eat any part of this fish. It just kept looking at it as if it felt sorry for what had happened. Behind you will see a Ruddy Turnstone and another Sanderling fading into the background.
