Description
Sea Whip Coral Rolling Ashore by Debra Martz
There are days that you might see just a few strands of the sea whip coral washing onto the beach. And then there are the days where mounds or piles of the coral washes onto shore. A close look into the mound of whip coral will show all of the other sea life that came in with it such as small shrimp and crabs.
When I first moved to the island back in 2003, I thought this was some type of twine washing ashore. Then with closer looks and some investigation I discovered it to be whip coral, a soft type of coral until it dries after being out of the water for some time. And most of the time it is yellow with a very small bit of red coral like in this mound.
