Palisades - Cimarron Canyon State Park - New Mexico by Debra Martz
The beauty of the Palisade cliffs simply takes your breath away. As you drive along NM Hwy64 through the Cimarron Canyon State Park you are surrounded by nature's beauty with the river running alongside the road and the mountains beginning to surround you. But if it is your first time to make this drive and suddenly, after rounding a curve, these beautiful cliffs come into sight, I'm sure your jaw will drop! I've made this journey through the canyon on an annual basis for several decades and still, I am in awe of the sight each time I pass through!!
From the Historical Marker: "These spectacular cliffs are cut by the Cimarron River through igneous rock known as a sill and composed of the rock type monzonite which was emplaced some 40 million years ago as these Southern Rocky Mountains were being uplifted. Elevation 8,000 feet."
