Description
The centre of Ostia was the Forum where the main buildings of the town were located. It was situated at the junction between Decumanus Maximus and Cardo Maximus, the two main streets. The overall design of the Forum is dated first half of the 2nd century AD during the reigns of Emperors Trajan, Hadrian and Antoninus Pius. The Capitolium, dedicated to the triad Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, was completely faced with marble as indicated by the holes left by the bronze clamps in the brick walls. For centuries the Capitolium was the only visible remain of the ancient town, because its other monuments had been entirely covered by the ground level rise (silting) caused by floods from the Tiber River.
Ostia was founded around the 4th century BC by King Anco Marzio and became the harbour of Rome, situated at the mouth of the Tiber. Throughout the following centuries, a flourishing trade and business center developed. Following the Barbarian invasions, the decline of Ostia began when the port was abandoned and became covered by silt over time.
The archaelogical excavations undertaken at the beginning of the XIX century have brought the ancient city back to light, a rare witness to 900 years of Roman civilization.
