Description
Ostia Antica - A City of Multiple Levels by Debra Martz
...........................
Founded in the 4th century B.C., Ostia grew constantly until the 4th-10th centuries AD in an ever faster urban expansion, curiously overlaying within the limited space enclosed by the city walls. New buildings on top of old, surpassed ones, streets on top of streets. In other words, the Imperial city of the 2nd century A.D. on top of the republican city; and then still further restorations, remodeling, readaptations during the late empire on top of the 2nd century A.D. city.
In the center of this image, the top of an arch from a lower level can be seen.
