...........................
After the Battle of Little Bighorn aka Custer's Last Stand, the Cheyenne and Lakota families removed their dead and placed them in tipis, on scaffolds and on hillsides. Estimates of dead ranges from 60-100 Native Americans. In 1890 the Army erected 249 white marble headstones across the battlefield to show where Custer and his men, including Indian scouts & interpreters and a few civilians, fell during the battle. It would be over a century, 1999, before red granite headstones were erected by the National Park Service at known sites of the fallen Cheyenne and Lakota throughout the battlefield. These markers were an important addition to the historic, cultural landscape which now provides visitors with a more balanced perspective of the fierce fighting that occured here in 1876.

A few have asked about the coins...I was told they just started appearing and are assumed to be a tribute to the fallen warrior.
