Description
Erechtheion - Porch of the Maidens by Debra Martz
The Erechtheion is situated to the north of the Parthenon on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. This is a southwesterly view showing the attached Porch of the Maidens (aka Caryatids). The six stately young women stand like sentinels facing the south, looking toward the Parthenon, the great temple of Athena. Casual and relaxed, the women are balancing a heavy stone roof on their heads. It is a remarkable display of female power: voluptuous curves combined with massive, muscular strength. Five of them are in the Acropolis Museum and the sixth one was pillaged by Lord Elgin and is in the British Museum; those on the building are casts.
