Description
Commanding Officer's Quarters - Fort McKavett by Debra Martz
The post commander's house was the only two-story building at Fort McKavett. It was constructed in 1856 and destroyed by fire in 1941. One of two buildings at the fort that stand as ruins; all others have been preserved/restored.
Fort McKavett is located in the Hill Country of Texas overlooking the San Saba River. Before Europeans arrived, the area had been home to various Native American groups. Spanish missionaries arrived in the 1750s and the U.S. Army in 1852. The Fort is a well preserved example of a Texas Indian Wars military post.
