Description
After leaving the hiking trail around the base of Devils Tower we turned on the road toward the picnic area and campgrounds to take a break. So glad we did as we found this wonderful sculpture that was positioned where one could see Devil's Tower through its center...if you dropped down to your knees... It was created and donated by Japanese artist Junkyu Muto in 2008. According to the informational sign, it is one of several sculptures of Muto's International Peace Project which are at spiritually significant places around the world. They are also found at Vatican City, Rome and Bodh Gaya, India, where the Buddha reached enlightenment.
Over 29 tribes consider the Tower to be a sacred place. This was the location where White Buffalo Calf Woman delivered the first sacred pipe to the Lakota People. The Circle of Sacred Smoke represents a puff of smoke from a ceremonial pipe used by Native American people.
Devils Tower National Monument, a unique and striking geologic wonder steeped in Indian legend, is a modern day national park and climbers' challenge.
