Description
Cactus in the Tree - Flood 2010 - Bentsen Rio State Park by Debra Martz I shot this image back in January 2017 while hiking the trails at Bentson-Rio State Park in southern Texas, thinking it was kind of odd seeing cactus high up in the tree. On a return trip to the park in March 2017, I took a tram ride and the driver stopped and pointed out that very cactus. She explained how the landscape was completely changed by the flood of 2010 and the cactus not only showed how high the waters were but that was the only cactus left in the park in the aftermath. So once back home, I started searching through my images. That tree with the cactus now had a story to tell.
July, 2010, hurricane Alex slammed northern Mexico and unleashed heavy rains, sending a torrent of water down tributaries that emptied into the Rio Grande. In turn, this storm caused major flooding of many of the Texas parks located along the Rio Grande. The high waters remained for months and forever changed the landscapes; many were gone and new types of plants appeared. What remained is still striving to make a come back, seven years later.
